Rohit Vemula, whose death caused havoc in the country after his suicide note, said he was a victim of casteism and discrimination, which made him take this hasty decision of giving up on his dreams and ending his life.
Nearly 9 months after his death, the quest regarding his caste is still a debatable topic, the story has now taken a new turn after a Video went viral online where Rohit is seen claiming himself as a ‘Dalit from Guntur‘. The video reportedly was shot days before Rohit committed suicide at the University of Hyderabad.
The two minute clip was now released by his friends, after there were questions being raised on his dalit identity by the police and other central government officers. His friends said the video will emerge as evidence of his Dalit identity. The footage was shot for a campaign on Facebook.
In the video, Vemula is seen saying: “My name is Rohith Vemula. I am a Dalit from Guntur. Jai Bheem to all. I am a student of University of Hyderabad since 2010. I am doing PhD in the social science department. The university has decided to suspend five Dalit students and they have expelled us from the hostel premises. They have said that the notice that we were served says that our presence in public places, hostel premises and administration building can be treated as criminal acts.He turns emotional while saying, I am the son of a daily wage labourer and my mother raised me.’’
Five Dalit scholars were expelled following a spat between Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)members and Ambedkar Students Association(ASA) in August last year. However, Vemula said that his clash with the ABVP was not new. “In 2012, ABVP had filed a case against me in Chanda Nagar police station where I was kept in detention for two days,” he says in the video which ends abruptly without any conclusion.
