The state of Tamil Nadu has been confronting a wave of protest regarding the ban imposed on the bull-taming festival Jallikattu. The new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, O Panneerselvam met Prime Minister Narendra Modi today in order to request an ordinance or a special order to bypass the ban on the festival, but he was told that the case is in court.
What’s striking is the statement by Mr Panneerselvam that he made later asserting that his government would soon take steps along with the centre on how to bring back Jallikattu. “You will soon see steps. Wait, good will happen,” he told reporters.
PM Modi shared in tweets that he had told the Chief Minister he appreciated the cultural significance of Jallikattu, but the case is in the Supreme Court. “The Centre would be supportive of steps taken by the State Government,” the Prime Minister assured.
