With opposition from all corners and on PM Narendra Modi’s suggestion, the government has rolled back the proposal to tax Employee Provident Fund (EPF) withdrawal. Finance Minister Arun Jailtley rolled back EPF tax in Loksabha. The proposal was under fire from both Employee unions and political parties who were saying government were taxing employees when they need the money most.
But what took everyone’s attention was Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi taking credit for withdrawal of EPF tax. Gandhi said “My pressure worked… I had warned the government against suppressing the salaried class. It is a good decision.” He further tweeted “I felt middle class people were being hurt by government, So i decided to put some pressure on government. Happy that they have got some relief.”
